George McClure papers, 1975.

General description of the collection: The George McClure papers consist of a copy made in 1975 of a memoir written 1 February 1898 by PVT McClure about military service during the Civil War. It also includes a photo of PVT McClure ca. 1900 and a sketch of PVT McClure written by a grandson. In the memoir, PVT McClure details his travels with the 100th PA Volunteer Regiment from Washington, DC to Annapolis, MD to Port Royal and Beaufort, SC, to Fortress Monroe, VA and finally through central VA to Manassas and the battle there in August 1862. The memoir ends with PVT McClure being sent back to the battlefield now held by Confederate troops to gather up the wounded and bury the dead Union soldiers. He tells of being transported on the steam ships Ocean Queen, Merrimac, and the Atlantic, his other travels being by rail. He describes a ship's cannon called a bell muzzle. He notes the disease prevalent on James Island, SC. He gives extensive comments on General Pope. At the end, he recounts being interviewed by General Robert E. Lee and his staff.
